Authors:

Dominique Seydel, Sebastian Bittl, Jakob Pfeiffer, Josef Jiru, Hanno Beckmann, Kathrin Frankl and Bernd Eissfeller

Abstract: Wireless vehicular networks are in the wake of mass deployment both in Europe and the USA. These networks introduce a new promising source of information about vehicular environments usable by cooperative advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). However, development and evaluation of such ADAS is still challenging. Thus, we propose a methodology for their development and evaluation process. It is applied to evaluate the fulfillment of requirements on position accuracy information within the communicated data sets. Accuracy requirements are only roughly defined and not sufficiently evaluated in real world environments. This holds especially for GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) optimized for maximum integrity of obtained positions, which is required for safety critical ADAS to increase robustness and reliability. Our main goal is to determine whether position accuracy provided by GNSS is sufficient for cooperative ADAS. Thereby, we find that pure GNSS input cannot fulfill position accuracy requirements in most test cases.

Binary Programing Model to Optimize RSU Placement for Information Dissemination

Authors:

Hamid Reza Eftekhari, A. Jalaeian Bashirzadeh and Mehdi Ghatee

Abstract: Vehicular communication systems are developed not only to increase safety but also for mobility of road transportation. Roadside units (RSU) are the prominent elements of this technology. This equipment is installed on roadsides and at intersections to gather traffic information from vehicles and send messages and alarms to vehicles. Due to the costly implementation and maintenance of this equipment, determining the number of RSUs and their placement are the important problems. In this paper, we propose a novel binary programming (BP) model to the placement of RSUs beside a road to maximize information dissemination to vehicles. This approach makes decisions based on the number of curves, number of on-ramps, accident rate, weather condition, and cost limitations. The proposed model is applied on Tehran to Pardis Freeway. According to the computational experiments, four operational phases are obtained to equip the whole road for information dissemination.

Abstract: The current living standard of industrial nations causes increasing CO2 emissions, particulate matter, and noise pollution. An essential amount of these environmental issues is induced by stop-and-go traffic within cities which is seriously characterized by short-distance freight transport trips with inner-city and suburban distances. The Smart City Logistik project strives for a practical and short-term solution to this problem in the concrete context set by the city of Erfurt, Germany. This paper provides the results of an open and intelligent infrastructure for transportation with electric vehicles. The special focus is on holistic reflection of ICT support in the electric city logistic.

Maritime Traffic Models for Vessel-to-Vessel Distances

Authors:

Gaspare Galati, Gabriele Pavan, Francesco De Palo and Giuseppe Ragonesi

Abstract: The maritime traffic is significantly increasing in the recent decades due to its advantageous features related to costs, delivery rate and environmental compatibility. The Vessel Traffic System (VTS), mainly using radar and AIS (Automatic Identification System) data, provides ship’s information (identity, location, intention and so on) but is not able to provide any direct information about the way in which ships are globally positioned, i.e. randomly distributed or grouped/organized in some way, e.g. following routes. This knowledge can be useful to estimate the mutual distances among ships and the mean number of surroundings vessels, that is the number of marine radars in visibility. The AIS data provided by the Italian Coast Guard show a Gamma-like distribution for the mutual distances whose parameters can be estimated through the Maximum-Likelihood method. The truncation of the Gamma model is a useful tool to take into account only ships in a relatively small region. The result is a simple one-parameter distribution able to provide indications about the traffic topology. The empirical study is confirmed by a theoretical distribution coming from the bi-dimensional Poisson process with ships being randomly distributed points on the sea surface.

Abstract: In this research, we present a real time monitoring system for Automotive Tire Set (ATS) using an acoustic signal. Order tracking techniques applied in signal processing module by using the recursive Kalman adaptive filtering algorithm which can be used to exact the order amplitudes of global acoustic signals. The detective system combines a signal processing module and orders amplitude calculated of feature extraction. On the basis of acoustic signal extraction to distinguish between normal and abnormal types can be used to acquire high resolution amplitude of different orders. The diagnostic process is based on recording the drive shaft of tire speed. This system is implemented on the platform of National Instruments (NI) compact-RIO and c-series modules. Instantaneous shaft speed and acoustic signal are respectively detected by means of fiber optical and array microphone. Experimental results were carried out for a practical Mitsubishi Freeca Car to appear obviously the effectiveness of the proposed system in tracking the ATS orders with high recognition rate. An intelligent prediction integration system with internet (IPII) for ATS was proposed.

Optimum Vehicle Flows in a Fully Automated Vehicle Network

Authors:

Joerg Schweizer, Tiziano Parriani, Emiliano Traversi and Federico Rupi

Abstract: This paper provides a novel assignment method and a solution algorithm that allows to determine the optimum vehicle flows in a fully automated vehicle network. This assignment method incorporates the following specific features: (1) optimal redistribution of occupied and unoccupied vehicles; (2) inter-vehicle spacing is adapted to meet the minimum safe distance criteria on congested link, (no collision in the worst failure case); (3) trip-time minimization of all traffic participants by a centralized vehicle routing. The latter feature allows the realization of a so called system optimum solution, which minimizes the total time of all trips. This assignment method is applied to two, topologically different, test networks at different travel demand levels, in order to determine: the share of unoccupied vehicle, the minimum number of required vehicles, the share of congested links, the lost trip-time of occupied vehicles due to the presents of unoccupied vehicles. Furthermore, the advantage of a centralized vehicle routing is quantified by comparing the total trip-times of a scenario using a system optimum solution with a scenario applying the user equilibrium solution, without considering unoccupied vehicle flows. Regarding the investigated scenarios, the share of unoccupied vehicle flows with centralized vehicle routing in a uniform, random demand scenario is approximately 11%􀀀14%.

Forecast-augmented Route Guidance in Urban Traffic Networks based on Infrastructure Observations

Authors:

Matthias Sommer, Sven Tomforde and Jörg Hähner

Abstract: Increasing mobility and raising traffic demands lead to serious congestion problems. Intelligent traffic management systems try to alleviate this problem with optimised signalisation of traffic lights and dynamic route guidance (DRG). One solution for the former aspect is Organic Traffic Control (OTC), offering a self-organised, decentralised traffic control system. Based on OTC, this paper presents two proactive routing protocols, resembling techniques known from the Internet domain, applied to the traffic routing problem: Distance Vector Routing and Link State Routing. These protocols were adapted to utilise forecasts of traffic flows to offer anticipatory and time-dependant DRG for road users. The efficiency of these protocols is demonstrated with simulations of two Manhattan-type road networks under disturbed and undisturbed conditions. The results indicate their benefit in terms of lower travel times and emissions, even under low compliance rates.

Improving Emergency Vehicle Routing with Additional Road Features

Authors:

Danny Brady and Byungkyu Brian Park

Abstract: Routing decisions affect everybody traveling on the roadways, but perhaps those decisions are never more important than for emergency responders. In a field where seconds count, getting lost or taking a sub-optimal route can mean the difference between life and death. Routing methods have advanced from hand drawn maps to smart phones with dynamic routing using GPS, and new data science methods can improve it further. This paper employs a modification to a common routing algorithm to improve route decision for emergency responders. By considering roadway geometry and connected vehicle technologies that simple routing algorithms ignore, Dijkstra’s algorithm was able to be customized specifically for emergency response. The lane count, intersection control devices, and median construction were three additional elements of data incorporated into the modified model. Through a case study of an area of Albemarle County, Virginia, USA and discussion with domain experts, this paper demonstrates the feasibility and potential benefits of using such an algorithm to improve routing decisions for emergency responders.

Recognition of Urban Transport Infrastructure Objects Via Hyperspectral Images

Authors:

Oleg Saprykin, Alexander Fedoseev and Tatyana Mikheeva

Abstract: Actualization of vector maps of the urban transport infrastructure, including street and road network, in conditions of constant changes is a resource-consuming task and it requires the automation of the process. The article considers the solving of problem of transport infrastructure objects recognition in hyperspectral images by deep convolutional neural networks. The hyperspectral images from different sources are considered for solving the problem. We propose a new approach to the formation of receptive fields of convolutional neural networks: the receptive field covers several pixels, but the depth of the colour channels is limited. In the proposed approach the receptive field moves in three dimensions in two spatial dimensions and in spectral channels dimension. It gives the ability to recognize the transport infrastructure objects by spatial patterns and spectrum.

Evaluation and Optimization of Adaptive Cruise Control Policies Via Numerical Simulations

Authors:

Clement U. Mba and Carlo Novara

Abstract: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) makes the driving experience safer and more pleasurable. Several appealing ACC policies have been introduced so far. However, it is difficult in general to understand which is the actual performance that can be guaranteed on a real vehicle. Another relevant issue is that no systematic methods can be found for the optimization of a control policy performance. The first aim of this paper is to compare different ACC policies by means of extensive simulations, considering different realistic road scenarios. This kind of study is important to analyze which policies can be more effective in view of their implementation on real vehicles. The second aim is to develop an optimization method based on a multi-objective Pareto criterion, finalized at designing high-performance policies. The method is tested by means of extensive simulations.

Design, Implementation and Testing of a Real Time System to Unambiguously Assign Detected Vehicles from Car-to-Car Communication and on-Board Camera

Authors:

Simone Fontanesi, Luca Fanucci and Frank Hofmann

Abstract: on-Board surround sensors, such as cameras and radars, are used in Advanced Driving Assistance Systems applications to improve the driver safety and comfort. In the meantime, Car-to-Car Communication systems are in the deployment phase and have been tested in huge test fields. In order to compensate the weaknesses and benefit from the strengths of both systems, their information can be fused. In this context, one major challenge is the unambiguous assignment of detected vehicles from different sensors, which is still an open research topic and the major target of this work. An innovative algorithm was first tested in Matlab using recorded data and then implemented on real hardware. The results obtained are promising and, from a spatial point of view, they show already a successful matching of vehicles. Compared with the solutions proposed in literature, the developed demonstrator is innovative, and represents the first step towards a real world application running in real time inside cars. Overall, this work is a useful contribution to active safety and autonomous driving applications based on sensor fusion and a good reference for further research on the topic.

Ahmed Elbery, Hesham Rakha, Mustafa Y. ElNainay, Wassim Drira and Fethi Filali

Abstract: Global warming, environmental pollution, and fuel shortage are currently major worldwide challenges. Eco-routing is one of several tools that attempt to address this challenge by minimizing network-wide vehicle fuel consumption and emission levels. Eco-routing systems select the most environmentally friendly route. The subpopulation feedback eco-routing (SPF-ECO) algorithm that is implemented in the INTEGRATION software can produce a reduction in fuel consumption levels by approximately 17%. However, in some cases, due to delayed updates or the lack for updates, its performance degrades. In this paper, we propose the ant colony based eco-routing technique (ACO-ECO), which is a novel feedback eco-routing and cost updating algorithm to overcome these shortcomings. In the ACO-ECO algorithm, real-time performance measures on various roadway links are shared. Vehicles build their minimum path routes using the latest real-time information to minimize their fuel consumption and emission levels. ACO-ECO is also able to capture randomness in route selection, pheromone updating, and pheromone evaporation. The results show that the ACO-ECO algorithm and SPF-ECO have similar performances in normal cases. However, in the case of link blocking, the ACO-ECO algorithm reduces the network-wide fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels in the range of 2.3% to 6.0%. It also reduces the average trip time by approximately 3.6% to 14.0%.

A Unified Real-time Automatic Congestion Identification Model Considering Weather and Roadway Visibility Conditions

Authors:

Mohammed Elhenawy, Hesham Rakha and Hao Chen

Abstract: Real-time automatic congestion identification is one of the important routines of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Previous efforts usually use traffic state measurements (speed, flow, occupancy) to develop congestion identification algorithms. However, the impacts of weather conditions to identify congestion have not been investigated in the existing studies. In this paper, we proposed an algorithm that uses the speed probe data and the corresponding weather and visibility to build a transferable model. This model can be used on any road stretch. Our algorithm assumes traffic states can be classified into three regimes: congestion, speed at capacity and free-flow. Moreover, the speed distribution follows a mixture of three components whose means are functions in weather and visibility. The mean of each component is defined using a linear regression using different weather conditions and visibility levels as predictors. We used three data sets from VA, CA and TX to estimate the model parameters. The fitted model is used to calculate the speed cut-off between congestion and speed at capacity which minimize either the Bayesian classification error or the false positive (congestion) rate. The test results demonstrate the proposed method produces promising congestion identification output by considering weather condition and visibility.

Dynamic Pricing and Energy Management Strategy for EV Charging Stations under Uncertainties

Authors:

Chao Luo, Yih-Fang Huang and Vijay Gupta

Abstract: This paper presents a dynamic pricing and energy management framework for electric vehicle (EV) charging service providers. To set the charging prices, the service providers faces three uncertainties: the volatility of wholesale electricity price, intermittent renewable energy generation, and spatial-temporal EV charging demand. The main objective of our work here is to help charging service providers to improve their total profits while enhancing customer satisfaction and maintaining power grid stability, taking into account those uncertainties. We employ a linear regression model to estimate the EV charging demand at each charging station, and introduce a quantitative measure for customer satisfaction. Both the greedy algorithm and the dynamic programming (DP) algorithm are employed to derive the optimal charging prices and determine how much electricity to be purchased from the wholesale market in each planning horizon. Simulation results show that DP algorithm achieves an increased profit (up to 9%) compared to the greedy algorithm (the benchmark algorithm) under certain scenarios. Additionally, we observe that the integration of a low-cost energy storage into the system can not only improve the profit, but also smooth out the charging price fluctuation, protecting the end customers from the volatile wholesale market.

Abstract: The paper will show, how different types of users are evaluating privacy and data security differently according to contextual differentiating traffic situations. The focus is hereby on an analysis of user types to see, if general attributes towards data capture can be identified. User requirements are investigated in age, gender, experience with driver assistance systems and technical affinity. Several significant effects like the influence of prior experience increasing the willingness to share data in an traffic optimizing scenario could be revealed. But results show also an undeniable reluctance towards sharing private data with other traffic participants or companies. Traffic management such as police or the infrastructure itself are however entrusted with various personal information and data.

CAPLOS - Compressed Air Powered Lateral Obstacle Simulator

Authors:

Marc Schneider, Markus Sieber and Berthold Färber

Abstract: The development process of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) should include user studies in order to ensure optimal human-machine-interaction. Relevant active safety test scenarios must be based on appropriate use-cases, i.e. critical traffic situations. In order to avoid endangering subjects’ physical well-being, test equipment is required that reliably simulates obstacles with realistic appearance that are also safe to crash. For cross-traffic scenarios and the examination of lateral driving behavior, existing test equipment, such as driving simulators, exhibit certain deficits. The authors present a compressed air powered lateral obstacle simulator (CAPLOS), a low-cost system for the creation of incursion-based critical situations. This paper describes the setup of CAPLOS and demonstrates its suitability for use in active safety ADAS user studies with exemplary driving study data.

Abstract: Modern vehicles are commonly equipped with several sensors to gather information about the direct environment. Due to the physical limitation of these sensors, the detection range and field of view are limited to the direct vicinity. This limits the functionality of driver assistance systems. A way to overcome this issue is to use digital road maps to generate a so called electronic horizon as virtual sensor about the environment ahead. All known electronic horizon providers are closed source and owned by companies. In the work at hand we present our concept of an electronic horizon provider that we have published as open source.

Shortest Path Routing in Transportation Networks with Time-Dependent Road Speeds

Authors:

Costas Constantinou, Georgios Ellinas, Christos Panayiotou and Marios Polycarpou

Abstract: This paper deals with the subject of shortest (in terms of traveling time) path routing in transportation networks, where the speed in the network’s roads is a function of the time interval. These networks are encountered in practice when the roads’ speed has been measured for several time instants during a large period of time (e.g., an entire year). In this way, time-dependent speed patterns can be derived for the network’s roads, that constitute an estimation of the network’s future behavior. For shortest path routing in these networks, the traveling time on the network’s roads must be calculated according to the time instant of departure. Conventional approaches perform this calculation under the assumption that the road’s speed has a constant (possibly distinct) value inside each time interval. In the work presented here, the assumption that the road’s speed is linear (possibly distinct) function of time inside each time interval, is considered. Under this assumption, a procedure is proposed that derives the traveling time on the network’s roads according to the time instant of departure. It is combined with Dijkstra’s algorithm, resulting in a practically applicable algorithm for optimal shortest path routing for the type of networks investigated in this work.

Abstract: This work describes recent advances in the analysis of driver aggressiveness in real road environments, based on on-board sensors, and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with GPS information. In order to provide driver behaviour identification, a low-cost hardware architecture had been developed to retrieve Controller Area Network (CAN) Bus information. These data, combined with the IMU and the GPS, allow to provide driver behaviour identification. Therefore, features such as steering angle, throttle pressed percentage, linear accelerations, etc. are fused to classify driver behaviour through an expert system. This development has been exposed in real-traffic situations, with 10 different drivers. Tool showed, will allow researchers, drivers, and insurance companies to better understand risky driving behaviours.

Managing an Urban Transport System in Enhancing the Area Stability

Authors:

Irina Makarova, Rifat Khabibullin, Eduard Belyaev and Vadim Mavrin

Abstract: The urbanized mankind is faced with vulnerability of urban systems, migration and concentration of population, low quality of habitat, loss of fertile land, and necessity of waste disposal. In large cities, a significant contribution to atmospheric pollution with sulphur dioxide, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and industrial dust comes from the motor transport. The motor traffic growth inevitably affects the human health by causing road and transport traumatism, respiratory diseases and diseases caused by physical inactivity. The proposed solution is based on optimization of a city transport system parameters. This was achieved by via simulation modelling taking into account a large number of parameters, both within and outside the system, many of the latter being stochastic. The recommendations include rearranging of the public transport routes and changing over to vehicles running on gas motor fuel.

Abstract: The article describes the results of road tests of light commercial vehicle equipped by ESP where the effectiveness of the electronic program estimated in conditions curvilinear manoeuvres: start of the corner and line changing (in accordance with Russian Standard GOST 31507-2012). The main objective of the study is the analysis of behaviour of a vehicle equipped with ESP, determination of the moment of ESP activating as well as the effect of ESP influence on LCV dynamics. The object of study is a metal cargo LCV with total mass 4500 kg. During the road tests on dry asphalt the vehicle speed and yaw of the longitudinal and transverse accelerations as well as the steering angle were synchronized registered. The analysis of experimental data shows that during manoeuvre "start of the corner" the threshold of dynamic stabilization was found at 58...59 km/h, when in the "line changing" it was about 60...65 km/h, that close to speeds regulated by GOST binding for all types of LCV (regardless of ESP).

Traffic Stream Short-term State Prediction using Machine Learning Techniques

Authors:

Mohammed Elhenawy, Hesham Rakha and Hao Chen

Abstract: The paper addresses the problem of stretch wide short-term prediction of traffic stream state. The problem is a multivariate problem where the responses are the speeds or flows on different road segments at different time horizons. Recognizing that short-term traffic state prediction is a multivariate problem, there is a need to maintain the spatiotemporal traffic state correlations. Two cutting-edge machine learning algorithms are used to predict the stretch-wide traffic stream traffic state up to 120 minutes in the future. Furthermore, the divide and conquer approach was used to divide the large prediction problem into a set of smaller overlapping problems. These smaller problems are solved using a medium configuration PC in a reasonable time (less than a minute), which makes the proposed technique suitable for practical applications.
